Dr Shaikh has served as a Fulbright Scholar/ Faculty-Fellow at American University, Washington, DC, where he conducted his post-doctoral research on citizen’s right to information. He has also attended Fulbright Institute at College of Journalism and Communication of University of Florida, Gainesville. He holds his PhD in Mass Communication from University of Karachi. He had his graduation in engineering from Mehran University of Engineering & Technology, Jamshoro in 1985. He has also attended a course on Financial Management at National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA) Karachi as well as obtained training for teaching and research at university level at the National Academy on Higher Education, University Grants Commission (UGC) Islamabad, presently known as Higher Education Commission (HEC).
Dr. Shaikh has served in various public and private sector positions. He has served as Director, SZABIST Center for Information & Research, Karachi, Director-General, Sindh Ombudsman’s Secretariat, Director-General, Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Director-General, Sindh Coastal Development Authority and Director-General (Colleges) Sindh. He has also served as Assistant Professor and Deputy Provost at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro as well as Executive District Officer (Higher Education) in Karachi City District Government. He also held additional charge of Chairman, Sindh Textbook Board, Jamshoro and Administrator, Sheikh Sultan Trust, Karachi, as well as taught the subject of ‘Print Media’ at Institute of Business Management, Karachi. He also edited ‘Science’ magazine as well as served as an anchorperson on current affair shows of Pakistan television during 1990-94.
Books & Research
Dr Shaikh has authored several books on the subjects relating to education and communication as well as writing biographies of leading personalities of South Asian origin. Two of his research-based books ‘Satellite Television & Social Change in Pakistan: A Case Study of Rural Sindh’ and ‘Benazir Bhutto: A Political Biography’ received good international reviews. He has also been writing articles on issues relating to his areas of interest in Daily Dawn and other publications.
Dr Shaikh is leading the historic institution of Sindh Madressatul Islam
(SMI) University, as its Vice Chancellor; Dr Shaikh holds PhD in Mass
Communication from University of Karachi and post-doctorate from American
University, Washington DC. He has also attended Fulbright Institute at
University of Florida's College of Communication and Journalism at
Gainesville, USA. He has twenty seven years of teaching and working
experience. He has authored several books including and contributed papers.
His areas of interest are Freedom of Information, Print and Electronic
Media, Digital Journalism and history.
Dr Shaikh is married with five children. He loves to drive extensively as well as visiting foreign countries. He has also interest in photography and social interaction with people of diverse origin and interests.
